Having a professional Doula can improve a birth experience in so many ways! A professional Doula is typically someone who runs her own company, is partnered with another professional Doula, or works for a Doula agency. Her work is taken very seriously and she is accountable for her actions. A professional Doula understands that attending births is not a hobby and she's going to be available to her clients on any given day and time. She has reliable back up in the event she cannot attend a birth if she operates as a solo Doula, or works with a team of Doulas and shares an on call schedule. She has a contract that helps to set clear boundaries for her clients. Her "office life" is efficient and organized and she returns correspondences in a timely manner. She dresses appropriately when visiting clients and attending births.
The professional Doula also strives to make connections within the local birthing community. With other Doulas, as well as, all care providers. She understands that a mom requires a team of support people who all get along and can work together in the heat of the moment. She knows the ins and outs of the local hospitals and birth centres... Where to park and what it'll cost, where the maternity unit, postpartum unit and NICU are located. She has a general sense of cafeteria hours and the best vending machines that partners can score a snack from at 3am. She has a good grasp on each hospitals unspoken rules... "At this hospital I can help myself to blankets in the warmer, but at that hospital I must ask a nurse to retrieve a warm blanket".
The professional Doula goes above and beyond to try and make each family feel important and supported. Her in-depth knowledge of her local area, coupled with her actual hands on skills and business know how make her a fantastic choice for all families!!
